Lumos celebrates 45 years

On April 1, 1981, we wrote our first certificate.

I wasn't there for that moment — but I've spent a significant part of my career living out what it set in motion. A single policy, written by a small team in Tennessee with a belief that specialty insurance could be done differently. That relationships mattered more than transactions. That partners deserved more than a product — they deserved a platform they could count on.

Forty-five years later, I'm proud to say we never lost sight of that.

The numbers tell part of the story. $742 million in claims paid across 400,000 individual certificates. 23.3 million certificates written. $10.77 trillion in face value protected. More than 1,500 partner companies spanning 21,000+ branches across 57 states and jurisdictions. These aren't metrics we assembled for a milestone — they're the cumulative result of doing things right, one relationship at a time, for four and a half decades.

But the number I keep coming back to isn't on any slide. It's the count of partners who have grown with us — institutions that trusted us early and have deepened that trust over years and decades. That kind of loyalty doesn't happen by accident. It happens when you make promises and keep them, when you build products that actually work, and when you treat every partner's success as your own.

This year also marks a new chapter for our company. The Plateau Group is now Lumos Insurance — a name that reflects where we're headed as much as where we've been. Lumos means light. It's a fitting word for a company committed to clarity: in our products, in our partnerships, and in the value we deliver.

And there is a great deal ahead to be excited about.

We are expanding aggressively into life, health, and senior markets — a natural extension of our specialty platform and a direct response to what we're hearing from partners and the people they serve. We are continuing to invest in technology and infrastructure that will allow our partners to scale with us more efficiently than ever. And we are actively growing our partner network, bringing Lumos to institutions that are ready for a different kind of carrier relationship.

Forty-five years is worth celebrating. But what excites me most is that the foundation has never been stronger, and the opportunity in front of us has never been larger.
